abstract = "Soil erosion is a process by which soil particles are detached and
removed from the land surface through the action of wind and
water. This phenomenon has turned one of most important
environment problems in Brazil. Therewith, studies of mapping
potential erosion areas have helped decision makers to minimize
erosive process. In this context, this work seeks to locate
erosion susceptible areas in Vale do Para{\'{\i}}ba region,
S{\~a}o Paulo. Some region characteristics exert strong influence
on erosion. Here three factors were considered: slope, soil type
and vegetation cover. These factors act together and combined.
Thus, it was possible applying geoprocessing techniques by
crossing information, to identify critical areas and which present
greater risk to occur of erosion. The crossed maps were made using
fuzzy gamma operator, making possible the generation of five
scenarios by manipulating the gamma parameter. A study area
vulnerability map resulted from the intersection of three maps
(slope, NDVI and soil type). This vulnerability map was sliced and
it was assigned five classes of erosion susceptible, classified as
follows: very low, low, medium, high and very high. This
classification indicates priority areas to make actions in order
to raise awareness and supervision, ie. indicate regions that need
to concentrate efforts for maintenance and/or recovery. The five
scenarios ranged from most favorable to most unfavorable
                         occurrence of erosion.",
